Anna Schmitz is a singer/songwriter/dancer living and working in the SF Bay Area.
Anna's music and inspiration pulls from a wide range of genres and artists including Shirley Horn, Herbie Hancock, Leonard Cohen, Lisa Fischer, James Blake, Laurie Anderson and Meredith Monk. Anna’s ability to weave together these various styles shines through in her intimate, honest writing and her fresh takes on classic jazz standards.
Starting in 2018, Anna began working with highly intuitive producer and accomplished guitar/bass player, John Hoy. Their shared love of jazz and improv is central to their writing process. In October 2022, Anna had the opportunity to collaborate with guitarist Adam Levy (Norah Jones, Tracy Chapman, Vulfpeck, Lizz Wright) on the song she wrote, “Don’t Ask Me No Questions”, which she then finished producing with John Hoy.
Anna was a technically trained singer and professional modern dancer in NYC, but it was her exposure to Sound and Movement techniques with Shakespeare & Co. in Lenox, MA that brought improvisation to the forefront of her practice.
While in NYC, she formed the Anna Schmitz Trio with guitar and bass, performing jazz standards. She has performed at Marion’s (NYC), Chelsea Park Music Festival (NYC), The Lenox Cafe (MA), The O’Hanlon Center for the Arts (CA), and at other private venues in Marin County, CA.
